Another meme! This one was stolen from [livejournal.com profile] nonelvis .

What's the last thing you ate? Whole wheat penne with homemade tomato sauce that I made last week and froze in batches.

What's your favorite cheese? I don't know that I have one. I love cheese. Feta, maybe?

What's your favorite fish? I am not really a fish person. We never really ate much fish growing up, because my mother hated it. She grew up with a Catholic mother who, on Fridays, would boil fish in milk. Apparently it was so tasteless that my mom hasn't been able to eat fish since. I've been experimenting with it more and more, though. I like to grill salmon once in a while, and tuna steaks are good. Give me time. I'll get there eventually.

What's your favorite fruit?  Strawberries, blueberries, pineapple, apples. But not pears! Never pears.

When, if ever, did you start liking olives? I don't recall ever not liking olives. Olives are good.

When, if ever, did you start liking beer? I still don't really like beer. I'll have one once in a blue moon if I'm out or there's nothing else available, but I almost never finish one. Instead, I prefer apple cider (which I can almost never get at bars). We have one here that's called Mystique, but I fell in love with Strongbow when I lived out west. I've never had it here.

When, if ever, did you start liking shellfish? I started liking scallops when I was a kid, and shrimp, but I've never really been a fan of shellfish. It's another one of those things I am working on. My introduction to lobster wasn't great, so I'm hoping for a do-over on that one.

What was the best thing your parent/s used to make? Mom was a fanstastic cook, but of all the recipes in her 300 cookbooks, The Pie wins, hands down. (See my last entry for details). As I said, it is spoken of in story and song. Also, my dad used to make the best folded-over peanut butter sandwich.

What's the native specialty of your home town? I'm a Montrealer, so obviously it's smoked meat. And bagels.

What's your comfort food? A grilled cheese sandwich and tomato soup. Sweet Potato Crack (which is sweet potatoes, garlic, thyme, salt, pepper, olive oil, and CRACK. Damn, that's addictive stuff.)

What's your favorite type of chocolate? Any. I like it dark (the darker the better), but I'm not against milk chocolate sometimes.

How do you like your steak? Medium-rare.

How do you like your burger? With relish, ketchup, pickles, hot peppers, and lettuce.

How do you like your eggs? Scrambled.

How do you like your potatoes? Sliced thin, tossed with olive oil, salt, pepper, garlic, sliced onions and baby carrots, and baked in the oven until they are crispy around the edges. Mmmmm.

How do you take your coffee? Girly. I almost never drink just coffee. I usually get a mocha or a latte.

How do you take your tea? Strong, with one sugar, no milk. Or honey, no milk.

What's your favorite mug? My best friend bought me a huge coffee mug from Starbucks. It's brown, with blue on the inside, and has the word "coffee" written in different languages all over it. That's my current favourite, because it can fit an extra-large mocha in it (and also, Marty bought it for me). At work, I use one of a series of travel mugs.

What's your cookie of choice? Right now, it's a raspberry-oatmeal cookie from the Second Cup in the mall next door to my work. It's chewy and delicious. But usually, I go for white chocolate-macadamia.

What's your ideal breakfast? Nigella Lawson's ricotta pancakes if I'm making it at home, or crepes with apples and cheese at the restaurant near John's work. I have to figure out how to replicate that recipe, because it's fantastic. Now, don't get this confused with my regular breakfast, which for the last little while has either been toast with peanut butter or cereal.

What's your ideal sandwich? When my friend and I went to Boston a few years ago, we had lunch at this bar that featured a sandwich called "The Day After Thanksgiving Sandwich" (or something). It was turkey, stuffing and cranberry sauce on a roll. I have been enjoying something very similar since Thanksgiving almost two weeks ago.

What's your ideal pizza (topping and base)? If I make pizza myself, I keep it simple, with olive oil, some sliced up tomatoes, bocconcini cheese and basil.

What's your ideal pie (sweet or savory)? The Pie. See above and my last LJ entry.

What's your ideal salad? Mixed greens with some fresh veggies is enough for me.

What food do you always like to have in the fridge? Hot sauce.

What food do you always like to have in the freezer? Soups and sauces that I have made and frozen for nights when I am too lazy to cook.

What food do you always like to have in the cupboard? Pasta, because even if I'm out of everything else, I can eat that with a bit of olive oil, salt and pepper and some parmesean.

What spices can you not live without? Curry, cinnamon, nutmeg, cayenne, and crushed red chilies.

What sauces can you not live without? Tobasco and Frank's Red Hot.

Where do you buy most of your food? The supermarket or the fruit store, although I am seriously spoiled for choice in this neighbourhood. There are lots of great places to get food here.

How often do you go food shopping? Whenever we need to, since we don't have a lot of food storage. My mom used to go twice a month to feed four people. I think we go at least twice a week for the two of us. But the difference is, we eat a lot more fresh food.

What's the most you've spent on a single food item? I honestly don't know.

What's the most expensive piece of kitchen equipment you own? Probably my espresso machine, which right now sells for about $250, or my new Cuisinart food processor, which was about $200. The espresso machine belonged to my mom, and she gave it to me when she gave up coffee for a while, and she also bought me the processor as a birthday/anniversary/housewarming gift.

What's the last piece of equipment you bought for your kitchen? Since I didn't buy the food processor, I would have to say a whisk with a ball in it. Or a cookbook stand.

What piece of kitchen equipment could you not live without? Oh, now it's my food processor. I've only had it two weeks, and I am in love. I named it and everything. But before Mr. Roboto came into my life, it was my big-ass chef's knife.

How many times a week/month do you cook from raw ingredients? 3-4 times at least, depending on the week. My schedule is messed up, since I work retail, so I work evenings a lot. But I try as often as time allows.

What's the last thing you cooked from raw ingredients? The Pie. We've been living off of stuff I made and froze last week, including the pasta sauce I mentioned before, sweet potato soup, Internet bread and leftover turkey (which is finally gone).

What's your favorite thing to make for yourself? I make a wicked mocha. But if I'm home alone, I'll probably just have toast or a sandwich.

What meats have you eaten besides cow, pig, chicken and turkey? Bear, ostrich, elk, moose and I'm sure a few others.

What's the last time you ate something that had fallen on the floor? This morning. Five second rule.

What's the last time you ate something you'd picked in the wild? Too long ago, because I don't remember.

Place the following cuisines in order of preference (greatest to least): Indian, sushi, Chinese, Italian, Thai, French.

Place the following boozes in order of preference (greatest to least): Rum, vodka, brandy, Gin, tequila, whiskey. I don't drink a lot of spirits. I'm a wine person.

Place the following flavors in order of preference (greatest to least): Garlic, basil, ginger, lime, aniseed.

Place the following fruits in order of preference (greatest to least): Apple, watermelon, pineapple, banana, cherry, orange.

Bread and spread: 14-grain hippie bread with blueberry jam.

What's your fast food restaurant of choice, and what do you usually order? I usually go with sushi or to the Thai Express if I want fast food. Although I do crave McDo's once in a very long while.

What are three of the best dining-out experiences you've had? On our honeymoon John and I ate a fancy dinner at a hotel on the beach in Barbados. Brunch at Tavern on the Green in Central Park on my 30th birthday. Hot dogs and fries at Decarie Hot Dogs in Montreal after a night out with friends.

What's your choice of tipple at the end of a long day? A glass of red wine.

Favorite cookbook/s? Current go-to books are The Joy of Cooking and Jamie's Dinners by Jamie Oliver.

Got any favorite food blogs? It's not strictly a food blog, but NotMartha is great. I get a lot of my recipes from a forum I belong to.

What's the next thing you'll eat? Probably Special K in the morning, if I have any milk.

I'm on a bit of a cooking binge right now, probably because the weather has started to turn and instinct tells me to stock up for the winter. I plan to post a couple of recipes in the next few days.

Yes, deliciously awesome. And also cute, because they're so tiny!
