I have neglected this journal for more than SIX YEARS. How is that even possible? The last thing I wrote was on January 1st, 2011. (I will point out that just about none of the resolutions I posted six years ago have come true. Including the one about juggling. 2011 was not the year, apparently.)

I'm trying to get back on the blogging wagon, and more involved in fandom in general. I now live in Ottawa, Ontario, which has a more vibrant fan culture than Quebec City did. One of the first things I did when I moved here was join a Doctor Who fan group, and I plan to be a lot more active in fandom. To that end, I have registered for a whole bunch of conventions:

Cornwall Area Pop Event (April 22-23)
Ottawa ComicCon (May 12-14)
Montreal ComicCon (July 7-9)
Long Island Who (Nov 10-12)
Gallifrey One (Feb 16-18)

If you're going to any of those, please let me know!

Resolutions

Ah, New Year's Day. You are so much better than New Year's Eve. New Year's Eve was spent in a weird funk, wherein I did not feel like doing anything and had to rally my strength to even go out for dinner with friends. As it is, I left before midnight, pleading general malaise. I was in bed just as 2011 was being rung in.

But New Year's Day, well, that's different. New Year's Day involved cinnamon French toast and coffee, Craig Ferguson reruns, a long bath with smelly bath things and a book, cuddles with a cat, and later on bubbly. It has been a good day, and I hope the rest of 2011 reflects the day I had, and not the evening I failed to have.

My resolutions for 2011 are hopefully realistic enough that I can follow through on them.  )

I am looking forward to 2011. I think 2010 was a hard year for just about everyone, and I wish everyone a better year than the last.

syzygy_dw: (11 Thursdays)
This time ten years ago, I was on a plane.

I was flying from Edmonton to Montreal, via Chicago. I had two huge suitcases and a backpack containing all the stuff I hadn't had put in storage with a moving company, or pre-shipped to my best friend, whose back room I would be moving into that night. I had had a miserable three years in Edmonton. I had just lost yet another shitty job, and I couldn't face looking for another one in that city.  At the same time, my mother was sick, and possibly dying. What had started out as a Christmas trip home had turned into a move.

Cut for length, angst and hospital talk. But there's a happy ending, honest. )

I have been sort of absent from the computer for a while-- not just LJ or Dreamwidth, but Tumblr and FaceBook, too. I have basically been on Twitter, and that's mainly because Twitter and the iPhone seem to go really well together, while my other on-line haunts don't. I use my phone for pretty much all my internetting these days. Part of it is because I spend all day in front of a computer, and I don't feel like it at home, but another part is that it's physically painful to do it now. I have a desk job for the first time in years, and while I love it, I am having problems with ergonomics. I already had tendinitis in both elbows, but now I am feeling it in my wrist. I have an ergonomic mouse and an adjustable keyboard, but it doesn't seem to be helping. I am going to have to figure out how to fix it soon, though, because just using the mouse is causing me a lot of pain. And I use the mouse a lot.

Still loving my new job, though, and my new job seems to love me, which is fantastic. I will reach the end of my probationary period next week, and I have to admit that I feel my old anxiety creeping in at the back of my mind, but I try not to let it. I know that the higher-ups like my work, and so far I have not received any complaints.

September was a busy month. Labour Day weekend a bunch of my friends came from Montreal to visit, and I went to Montreal the next weekend to attend Comic Con. And, although I didn't know it at the time, I had my first real sinus infection (despite years of sinusitis, I have never had a sinus infection. I never want to again). I thought I had a really bad cold, but by Wednesday my face and my ear hurt, I had blown my nose about a zillion times, and I couldn't feel my teeth. I went to a new walk-in clinic and was diagnosed pretty much right away. I was given giant antibiotics, and for the first couple of days, they made me sick. On the 18th, my 35th birthday, I had to teach an English class and then man a table at a community event. I felt pretty crappy and tired all day, and by the time I got home, I wanted to die, and just crawled into bed. I had a bad reaction to the meds later on that evening, and was sick. I was miserable and feeling very sorry for myself, because it sucks to be sick on your birthday. I got a bit of a birthday do-over on the 19th, when John took me to the Chateau Frontenac for their famous brunch. I was worried that I would be too sick to go, but I was OK. I didn't eat a lot, but I had a good time. Later, we walked around the old city, and we went home when I started to feel worn out.

I went to Con*Cept in Montreal the first weekend of October, and that was WAY better than Montreal Comic Con. I hadn't been to that particular con in about 15 years, and it was nice to re-connect with my fandom friends from long ago. I went with my friend Ben, and his girlfriend and one of his work friends, and we had a great time. Five minutes after arriving in the dealer's room, I managed to buy 13 Doctor Who books (the old Target novelizations) and a black RC Dalek, all for about $25. I bought a bunch more Who books the next day, and found some of the new 11th Doctor hardcovers at Indigo. Total Doctor Who books that weekend: 23, which I consider to be a win. I was also complimented on my Doctor Who scarf, took part in some fun panels, and won the Geek-Off. (That was a trivia contest, which I pwnd because of my pedantic knowledge and Hermione-like hand-raising reflexes. I won a kick-ass wireless headphone set and a free membership to Polaris in Toronto next summer.)

My friend Andy, whom I haven't seen in more than five years, came to visit from Toronto. Andy was my first ever internet friend, and we have known each other since 1995. This was his first visit to Quebec City, and he loved it. It was so much fun having him here. There's nothing like a friend who has known you since your youth. I miss him a lot, and I hope he comes to see us again soon.

Finally, this week John and I celebrated our 8th wedding anniversary. In one way, I can't believe he and I have been together that long, and in another it feels like we've been together our whole lives. Marrying him has been the best thing I have ever done.

My arm is killing me, so I'll stop here. But I'll be back. I haven't forgotten you, my friends in the computer!
syzygy_dw: (Default)
My birthday isn't until mid-September, but I have my birthday present already-- a shiny new32gb iPhone 4! I got it early because, well, one was available. I went to Futureshop to see if there was any way I could have my name put on a list, or at least find out when they expected a shipment, and the salesperson said they had two in stock. So I got one, rather than continue to play the cat-and-mouse game. I really hate that false scarcity stuff that Apple and Nintendo and all those guys pull. But it works, doesn't it?

And let me tell you, I understand why people are losing their shit over these things. I loved my iPod Touch, but the iPhone blows it out of the water. I had to go up to the military base the other day, and since I don't have a car, I had to take the bus out to somewhere to meet my lift. Instead of guessing where I had to get off, I was able to look up the bus stop I was supposed to get off at, and see where I was in relation to it! It's like I live in the future or something! I love having instant Internet access wherever I go.

The iPhone is also replacing my camera, and I have had fun snapping pictures and not having to wait for the flash to warm up. It takes pretty good shots, too. And I have downloaded an app that lets you selectively colour photos. I played around with some pics, and did this:

Original

Original

The retina display is really sharp. It's amazing how much clearer things are on this compared to my iPod, and I always thought my iPod's screen was pretty good. I haven't really played with the video camera much, but I am looking forward to it.

As a phone, it sounds a lot clearer than my old one. I don't know much about dropped calls, since I haven't really used it as a phone much yet (Hey, I've had it a day, OK?) but the reception seems pretty good. The touch-screen phone interface takes a bit of getting used to, since I have only ever had little flip phones, but it's not that big a deal. And I love that I can check my messages without calling my mobile phone provider. Text messaging is great, because a) it doesn't take forever, and 2) I can actually follow a conversation now.

I haven't explored half of what this new device can do, and I am already in love. Meanwhile, John has inherited my iPod Touch, and I think he's infatuated with it. I don't think he ever understood my love for it, but now he's beginning to. He's been exploring all the apps, downloaded some books and podcasts, surfed the internet, and and has even taken it out for a run, and has proclaimed it "not bad". High praise from him!

I am constantly amazed by the technology in these little devices, and how easily they become indispensable. A few years ago, I didn't even have a cell phone. Now I have a computer in my pocket. It blows my mind!

I recently got into a friendly debate about feminism, children, and how women these days are free to decide whether or not they want children. The OP mentioned in her journal that it's no longer an issue for women in 2010. I have to disagree. While women have a lot more choice these days, thanks to birth control and changing attitudes, the default assumption is that women who get married do so because they want kids. Women are still expected to have babies, and those of us who don't want to are seen as selfish, broken, or worse. We are still cajoled and pressured to become mothers, and sadly, some women do bow to that pressure, even if they don't want to. Some women aren't even given the choice at all. So no, I don't think the issue is resolved.

I am married, and we are childless by choice. But that doesn't stop people from trying to pressure us into having kids. (Actually, John doesn't get a lot of pressure in that regard, because it's more acceptable for men not to want to become fathers than it is for women not to want to become mothers.) I have ranted about this on LiveJournal before. About a year ago, a friend of mine posted a follow-up article to something she read in MacLean's Magazine. I sent her a comment with my thoughts, which she encouraged me to develop into an article to submit to the publication she writes for. My follow-up was ultimately rejected, but I held on to it with the intention of posting it here eventually.

I have included the links to the original articles. Both are still available to read on-line, if you're interested. But let's keep the comments here, please. Both of these articles are almost a year old. (And don't read the comments over at MacLean's, I beseech you. They are poison.)

GAH!!!

syzygy_dw: (11 & 4 Mini)
John and our friend Michèle are outside drinking wine on the patio without me, and I really really wish I could be out there, too, but I can't, because there are FUCKING WASPS. John and Michèle had been eating paté and crackers with their wine, and the wasps came, but they went away when John brought the paté inside. So, I figured it was OK to go and sit on the patio, too. But every time I went outside, the wasps came back. It didn't matter how long they had been gone, they were back within minutes of my sitting down. Last time, one almost landed on me,  and I let out a shriek and bolted inside as fast as I could. I watched them from the other side of the patio screen, almost in tears, as John and Michèle tried to wave them off. I think part of it is that they discovered food there a while ago, and they keep coming back for more. And I think part of it is that they can smell my fear.

Wasps are my one big phobia. I am not fond of heights or crowds, but I can control that. But if there's a wasp (or even another hovering insect that maybe could be a wasp) I get all flaily and panicky. I am so scared of them that I can't control myself around them. I think it's because unlike bees, wasps will sting you just because they can. Bees will die, so they only sting you if they have to. Wasps don't die when they sting you, so they'll just do it over and over. They also hover, and don't go away when you shoo them. And for some reason, they love me, so they hover near me all the time. I have wasp traps set up, but they ignore them completely. The worst part is that I have never been stung. Maybe if I were to be stung, the fear would go away? Or maybe it would get worse. I don't think I want to take the risk.

So now I am inside for good, I think, and not enjoying a nice evening on my patio. I will research ways to get rid of wasps and maybe build another trap.

Gah, I can feel them on me.

(In case you were wondering, yes, The Unicorn and the Wasp did indeed scare the crap out of me. I have a hard time rewatching it, because OMG GIANT FUCKING WASP.)

Day 16 – Your Favorite Who-Related FanFic

Alex by schrodinger. I usually avoid OC fics like they were on fire, because they're usually poorly-written Mary-Sue fics full of girls with implausible names who travel with the Doctor and charm the pinstripes off of him. But schrodinger has created a wholly original character in Alex, and not only is she not a Mary-Sue, she's barely even likable:

She's nineteen years old. She likes -- in no particular order -- high-heeled shoes, fingernail polish and energy weapons. And the first chance she gets, she's going to kill a Time Lord.

Alex does have a few redeeming qualities, such as her intelligence, her sense of humour, and her rather impressive repertoire of swear words. You end up kind of loving the little psychopath by the end of the first story. And I defy you to not fall in love with schrodinger's future Doctor. He bears a passing resemblance to Eleven, with his tousled brown hair and green eyes, but that's where the similarity ends. Unlike Eleven, he's almost supernaturally calm. He has a dry sense of humour and an inability to get overly disturbed by Alex's cheerful attempts to kill him. He dresses sort of like Ted from How I Met Your Mother. But for all that, he can go all Oncoming Storm with the best of them.

Alex is part one of a (sadly all too short) series. Part 2, Among Mad People, features Bernice Summerfield, which is worth the price of admission right there. It's a multi-chapter fic that doesn't fail to deliver the goods. Plus, did I mention Benny's in it? Two-Body Problem is quite good as well. It's a nice little coda to the series.

If you haven't already read this series, do yourself a favour. Read it right now.

Day 17 – A Piece of Who-Related FanArt

If you know who created this, please let me know, because it's AWESOME. I mean, seriously. Can you imagine what the reaction would be if Bill and Ted saw the Master's TARDIS from The King's Demons?

"Iron Maiden? EXCELLENT!!11!"

I want someone to write a fic where the Doctor, Bill and Ted, and Marty McFly arrive at the same point in time. Hilarity would ensue, obvs.

Day 14 – The Villain Who Scared You the Most

Yeah, this scared the shit out of me, but probably not for the reasons intended.

(Although Prisoner Zero was pretty scary, no? Those teeth!)

Day 15 – Favorite Who-Related Tumblr

Mofftiemnao is probably the most consistently funny Tumblr thingy I've come across so far. Blog has a way with words.

BTW, if you're interested, mine is here. It's no Moffteimnao, but then again, it couldn't be, could it?

Stay tuned for the rest of the days! I'm slowly catching up!

I am so far behind on this meme. It's been a weird week, with work and heat and a haircut and a pointless job interview and lots of hanging out with friends, and it's sort of hard to sit in front of a computer when your apartment is a jillion degrees and your hair is melting. I would have updated from my patio, but I as yet don't have a laptop, netbook or iPad. (I WANT AN IPAD.)

Ahem. Anyway, here are the first of the two meme days that I missed. More to follow.

Day 12 – Whatever Tickles Your Fancy

I hate pears, too. Blerg. Last summer, during Worldcon, I tried to find a plastic pear for Paul Cornell to sign. [personal profile] nonelvis , [personal profile] columbina and I looked all over Montreal's Chinatown. We found every other plastic fruit you can imagine, but no pears. I mentioned this to Paul, and he was disappointed, because he liked the idea of having his own fruit, just like Steven Moffat (Moffat has bananas, which are good, apparently).

Before I went to Gallifrey 21, I tracked down a couple of pear fridge magnets, and I got Paul to sign one for me. I gave him the other one, much to his bewilderment. No word yet on whether he keeps it on his refrigerator. Here's mine:

Day 13 – Your Favorite Villain

I don't know why, but I just love him:

He's so awesome. He kills people with strawberry fondant surprise.

(Hey, I never said he was the best villain, just that he's my favourite.)

Day 10 – A Who-Related Photo That You Took

This is the cake from my friend's nephew's 13th's birthday party. As you may have guessed, it was Doctor Who themed. My friend throws kick-ass kids' parties. They usually involve a treasure hunt, and for this one, her nephew JS was the Tenth Doctor. He and his companions, Rose, Jack, and Romana (me) traveled through space and time in the TARDIS (the downstairs bathroom) looking for the segments to the Key to Time.

Ever wondered what blue tastes like?

There were puzzles to solve, codes to break, a piñata, and my friend's brother who is an engineer, disguised his robot to look like a Dalek:

Yes, it's an actual robot. One day, he's going to build a Dalek.

Anyway, the party was awesome. Tons of people got involved, playing all the various characters, decorating the house (I wish I had a picture of the bathroom TARDIS, it was so amazing) and coming up with all the games and puzzles. We even managed to get one of his birthday presents, a sonic screwdriver, to play a major role. JS was thrilled to bits with this birthday, and he still talks about it two years later. He's almost too old for these parties now, which is too bad.

But don't worry, my friend has a niece. She's only three, but she's already a Doctor Who fan. One of her first English words was "EXTERMINATE!"

Day 11 – Your Favorite Season (Classic or New)

I can't choose just one season out of all of them, so I am going to pick one from the classic era, and one from the new series.

Hands down, my favourite classic series season is Season 16, otherwise known as The Key to Time. It's the season that introduced Romana, who is my favourite classic series companion. She was a character that could hold her own against Tom Baker's Doctor, and Mary Tamm did a fabulous job at it. It had Douglas Adams as both a writer and a script editor. There were pirates (in SPACE!), knights, androids, the Doctor flirting with Unlimited Power, Romana's fantastic wardrobe, and a robot dog. Plus a really intricate story that takes an entire season to tell. It's pretty amazing, really. I have watched it many times, and I was very happy to receive the box set for Christmas last year.

My favourite new series season is (wait for it...) Series Fnarg 5. Yeah, a big shock, I know. But as much as I love the other seasons (all criticisms aside), Series 5 delivers on so many levels. It has consistently great stories (yes, even Victory of the Daleks. Shut up, I like it), Matt Smith is amazing as Eleven, Amy Pond is fun and weird, bow ties and fezzes are now cool, and cracks in the wall are now scary. There's RIVER FUCKING SONG, Rory, and a series-long story arc that makes a ton of sense and pays off in so many ways. Plus, the series finale was just so emotionally satisfying.

Plus, how cute are Mazza and Kazza? SO CUTE:

I am so sad Series 5 is over. Saturdays are just not the same without it.

Day 09 – A Who-Related Photo That Makes You Angry/Sad

This makes me both angry and sad.

It makes me sad, because Donna was going to travel with the Doctor forever, knocking about the universe with her best mate, and now she can't even remember him or her brain explodes. She was once the most important person in the universe, and now she's back to being the shallow, oblivious Donna from The Runaway Bride. Her whole family has to tiptoe around her for the rest of her life, and she walks around with holes in her memory. All those experiences were stolen from her.

It makes me angry, because Russell T Davies essentially ruined the character*. He sent Donna on an amazing journey, where she learned and grew and became awesome, and reset her to her old self. Why did all her memories have to be taken? Why not just block off the memories pertaining to the metacrisis, since those were the ones causing the problems? The whole thing was cruel and unnecessary, and it makes her journey mean nothing. I think I would have preferred that Donna died, because her death could have had meaning. I know he was going for tragic, here, but this wasn't tragic. This was just a waste.

I can't even watch Journey's End, because it makes me so angry, and I sometimes have a hard time watching the rest of Series 4, because I know what's coming.

The Rest of the Meme... )

*He didn't exactly do wonders for the Doctor here, either. There's something a bit squicky about the Doctor forcing his way into another person's mind, while she begs him not to. That he's doing it to save Donna's life doesn't make it any better.

Day 08 – A Who-Related Photo That Makes You Happy

I know, I know, a picture of the Blitz isn't supposed to make someone happy. But [livejournal.com profile] othellia must have been reading my mind, because I saw The Empty Child a little while ago, and it occurred to me that Eleven was probably hanging out with Amy and Churchill right around the same time. And hey, Jack's probably there a bunch of times, too. I'm so glad I'm not the only one who thought this!

This picture is currently my desktop background, because it's so well conceived. Go check out the original.

Day 07 – Your Favorite Piece of Music

I thought about choosing something from Series Fnarg, because the music has been so good, especially now that it's not played at full blast anymore. Amy's Theme in particular is really wonderful. I thought about Martha's Theme, or A Noble Girl About Town, but I think the one that I listen to the most is probably this one:

Madame de Pompadour

I love it because it's haunting and sad, and because it breaks my heart just a little every time I hear it. I love the little music-box thing at the end. And I love that it brings me right back to this gorgeous episode, with the courageous courtesan and her Fireplace Man, which was the episode that made me fall in love with Doctor Who.

Day 05 – Your Favorite Companion

Kameleon.

Hahahaha! NO.

My favourite companions (yes, again, there are more than one) are Romana, Donna Noble, Martha Jones, Amy Pond and Kameleon Ace. They  aren't afraid to give the Doctor a hard time when he needs it (which is often), and they pull his ass out of the fire more than once. They rein the Doctor in when he gets too crazy, and he would be utterly lost without them.

The other days... )
syzygy_dw: (Default)
I skipped yesterday, because I felt crappy. But that means today you get a double post, so quit your whinging.

Day 03 – Your Favorite New Series Episode

Again, so many to choose from! I think before Series Fnarg, I would have said either The Girl in the Fireplace, Blink, or Midnight. But now that the latest series has ended, I think I can safely say that my favourite episode is Vincent and the Doctor.

Like Amy, I have always had a bit of a soft spot for Vincent Van Gogh. His story is so heartbreaking, and his life was so tragic, yet he managed to create some of the most iconic paintings of all time. Just about everyone is familiar with his work. I myself have a print of Starry Night hanging in my living room.

So to see his character brought to life in a way that treats him with respect, without treating his mental illness lightly, is always a wonderful thing to see. Yes, they had to Who it up a bit, because there has to be a hook of some kind to draw the Doctor in, but the monster was really secondary to the story.

Day 04 – Your Favorite Doctor(s)

I love all the Doctors. Yes, even Six, who doesn't get enough love. But I think I would choose Four, Nine, Ten and Eleven.

Yes, I know it's cheating to pick all the new series Doctors and the most popular Doctor of all time. But I can't help it. Four is My Doctor, because he's really the first Doctor I remember watching. For most North Americans, he's the first Doctor we ever saw, and we imprinted on him like baby ducks. Even when Doctor Who was barely a blip on my radar, I could instantly recognize Tom Baker's Doctor. Tom Baker (and his scarf) will always symbolize Doctor Who for me. I love his energy, his delivery, his big grin and his alienness. I love that he played even serious scenes for a laugh sometimes, because I think it's what the Doctor would do. His Doctor wasn't human, and he didn't react the way humans would.

Nine was the first New Series Doctor, and he brought something new to the role. He has a vulnerability that the others didn't have, because of the Time War. I am not always thrilled that Rusty killed off the Time Lords, but it did give Christopher Eccleston a chance to act all broody in black leather, which totally worked for him. You get the sense that he wants to be happy and fun-loving, but he can't because he's so damaged. So he pretends anyway. And it gives him a sort of manic energy. Nine is all kinds of messed up. It was a new direction for the Doctor. I am sad that Eccleston only did one season, but at the same time, I don't think more than one season of broody angsty Doctor would have worked out.

David Tennant's Doctor is more relaxed. He has shed most (but not all) of the Time War Angst, and he seems to be more about the happy fun tiems of time travel. Ten is unpredictable. One minute, he's a ferret on a caffeine high, bouncing from one interesting thing to another, and the next minute he's the Oncoming Storm, bringing the smackdown to people who dare do the wrong thing. He has the Angst, just like Nine, but he tends to hide it better, until it all comes boiling out. David Tennant is such a great actor, and he can turn on an emotional dime. One of the great things about Ten is you can tell David Tennant just loves playing him. Tennant is One Of Us, a geek and a Doctor Who fan. Plus, he's pretty easy on the eyes, isn't he?

And then there's Eleven. Like a lot of people, I was initially skeptical when Matt Smith was announced as the Eleventh Doctor. He was only 26. But Steven Moffat's no dummy. He's One Of Us, too, and he wouldn't pick just anybody to play the role of the Doctor. If he saw something in this weird-looking young guy that said "Doctor" to him, I was willing to give Smith a chance. And I am so very glad I did. Matt Smith is amazing as the Doctor. He's quirky and odd, with tons of energy, but he has the gravitas and demeanor of an old man. He had me convinced that he was a thousand years old right from the get-go. (Yes, I said a thousand. The Doctor clearly lies about his age.) Matt Smith brings something back to the character of the Doctor that I didn't even realize was missing until he showed up: Joy. The driving force in Eleven's life is no longer angst. It's sheer, wondrous joy. You got that sense from the first time he bounds up the ramp to the TARDIS console. He loves his life, he loves traveling, and he loves getting into trouble (even if he denies it). Matt Smith's Eleven is quickly becoming my favourite Doctor. I hope he sticks around for a long time.

Plus, he makes tweed and bow ties sexy

Genesis of the Daleks

What's not to love? It has Daleks, Davros, the Doctor being faced with a terrible moral decision (which eventually sparks the Time War), Sarah Jane being all awesome and climbing a giant tower, wonderful lines like this:

The Doctor: Excuse me, can you help me? I'm a spy.

And the best thing ever: HARRY GETTING HIS FOOT STUCK IN A GIANT CLAM!

Seriously, Character Options, you have to make a Harry Sullivan and Giant Clam set. I would pay real money for it.

And then, there's this:
