Book Club

I'm in a book club. We get together once a month or so, discuss books and eat. It's a good arrangement. I like these women, we have fun when we get together, and the books we pick are usually really great.

But I have a confession: I can't remember the last time I finished one of the books.

In my defense, the last one was huge. It was supposed to be a summer read, but I got it about three weeks before the September meeting, and despite dedicating every free moment to it, I didn't even make it one quarter of the way through.

I don't sit around reading as much as I used to. Time was, I could go through three or four books a week. But now, if I pick up a book, it's because I really want to read it. While the book choices we've had with the book club have been great, I guess having a deadline imposed on my reading is making it feel too much like work. I put down a book I was really enjoying so I could read the book club selection. I think I may resent it just a little bit.

Maybe I just have a short attention span. Maybe if we had a movie-watching club...

What book were you supposed to read? I enjoy reading really long books, but they do require a time commitment I can't always give them.

The current one is Love in the Time of Cholera, which I am enjoying. Before that was Memoirs of Cleopatra (the brick).

I think part of the problem is that we never seem to set a date. It used to be that our meetings were on the first Tuesday of the month. Now it's so random that I never know when the meeting is, and I merrily read whatever I want to read, and then someone sends an e-mail saying "Hey, how does this Wendesday sound for the next meeting?" Meanwhile, I've been reading Middlesex, and Love in the Time of Cholera has been sitting in my "to be read" pile, unopened.

Also, the books we've been reading lately are so serious (with the exception of Kafka's Soup). Just to go against the grain, my suggestion for the next book is A Dirty Job by Christopher Moore!

I've read Love in the Time of Cholera, but it was so long ago I don't remember any of the plot. I remember liking it, though, since I always like Garcia Marquez.

I haven't heard of Memoirs of Cleopatra. I suggest renting the Rome DVDs instead ;-)

I'll probably do that anyway, and I will finish Cleopatra someday. (Probably someday waaaay in the future.)

The most ironic twist to this whole book club thing: I work in a bookstore, and I can't finish a book!

Welcome, BTW

Hey, Nonelvis, you're my first (and so far only) reader! Welcome. Dig my highly original journal title!

(I will be changing that when I think of a better one!)

By the way, you'll find other TUS members on my flist as well as [livejournal.com profile] columbina's, if you're looking for other LJ users to friend.
